Following birth, the mother and her infant are cared for on the Maternal Child Unit at one of our hospitals. Mothers and babies generally stay together in the same room throughout their hospital stay unless there are complications - if so, the baby may spend some time in one of our Special Care Nurseries.
A mother and baby stay can vary from a few hours to a few days, depending on the type of delivery and the health of the mother and baby.
Register Your Baby's Birth with Service Ontario
Every child born in Ontario must be registered with Ontario’s Office of the Registrar General.
You can register your baby’s birth, apply for a Birth Certificate and Social Insurance Number, as well as apply for Canada Child Benefits through ServiceOntario.ca/newborn.
