Adult Volunteer Roles

The Georgetown Hospital volunteers are highly visible throughout the hospital. We have almost 200 active adult volunteers who strive to enhance services which the Hospital offers to its patients by supplementing the work of our staff, spending the time to touch the lives of our patients and visitors by helping them throughout the hospital.

We welcome applications from volunteers of varied skill sets. For those with healthcare degrees or certificates, please be advised that volunteering will not allow you the opportunity to practice or develop your clinical or technical skills, nor are our volunteer roles designed to be professional internship opportunities.

The steps to becoming a volunteer include an application, interview, orientation and training. Volunteers usually commit to one shift per week, 2-4 hours in length and agree to fulfill this commitment for a minimum of 50 hours or 6 months of continuous service.

Volunteer position vacancies change regularly. Some of our placement areas include:

Complex Continuing Care (Chronic Care) – May include assisting with programs, visiting patients, assisting with meals, as required.

Diagnostic Imaging – Volunteers assist in the smooth operation of the Diagnostic Imaging department by escorting or connecting patients from the Registration Desk to different areas within the department.

Gift Shop – Volunteers work as cashiers.

Lobby Connections – Volunteers greet, assist and escort patients and visitors entering the Hospital from the Front Lobby.

Medical/Surgical Unit – Patients' water jugs are replenished, trays tidied and refreshments served in the evening.

Worship Services – Escort patients and assist the clergy member to deliver this weekly service to the patients. Piano players are needed as well.

Visiting Patients - We have two patient visiting programs for seniors at the hospital. Our Buddy program supports patients with dementia and the SMILE program helps prevent delirium and functional decline.

Volunteer Association Board of Directors – Board members provide services, fundraisers and the allocation of funds to projects within the hospital.
