Eat Smart Award

In 2013, all 3 of our cafeterias received the Eat Smart Award of Excellence for the third year in a row. Eat Smart is an award program that recognizes workplaces, schools and recreational centers in Ontario that meet exceptional standards in nutrition, safe food handling and providing smoke free environments.

The annual process involves a detailed analysis of our cafeteria menus and offerings at all sites. We are required to provide a variety of healthy choices, including whole grain choices, vegetables and fruits and lower fat options.  The department must also have an excellent track record in food safety based on the requirements of Ontario’s Food Premises Regulations and least one full-time food services employee certified in safe food handling. A review of the departmental public health inspections is used to determine if this requirement is met.
